French Quarter is located within the historic old town of Southampton. Telephone House, an existing redundant commercial building, is located opposite the site. War-time damage combined with post-war traffic planning had destroyed the historic urban fabric of French Quarter. The existing buildings were of poor quality with frontages set back behind wide pavements, destroying the sense of enclosure and impeding activity on the streets. A four lane carriageway cutting across the historic grid of the city resulted in loss of spatial definition to key streets. Here is a building of the church to literally ‘Holy Family’ with classic architecture. This church building is the most striking and largest of all the buildings Antoni Gaudi. Architect of the Sagrada Familia: Antoni Gaudi, Perhaps the most stunning Spanish architecture, a building wild and inventive. Gaudi can be described as a surrealist architect and his work has some resonance with the work of Surrealist artist Salvador Dali.
Sagrada Familia use in stone caricatures to depict the story of Christianity but the flamboyant has made it a symbol for the city as a whole. Gaudi often uses organic elements on top of the tower, shaped like a clove strong cross with their crosses and statues are very typical. This is a project involving the re-establishment Pod No 4 BBC’s Castaway 2000 project, produced by Lion Television Scotland. This building was originally designed in 1999 by Andrew McAvoy of Blast Architects in direct response to a short survival and landscape Taransay Castaway BBC. They lived for one year on the island of Taransay in the Outer Hebrides, in the extreme climate and the SSSI.
The Kits of parts were carefully disassembled at the end of the Project and have been in storage since March 2001. Two have found a home at Cove Park Arts Centre near Glasgow and one nestles in a dune on the Island of Harris. The form of the Pods allow for minimal visual intrusion and have a more fitting aesthetic and purpose than the standard building of the Highlands and Islands – the common bungalow.
